OUR STORY
Since his time in law school, Taro Fukuyama, Co-Founder and CEO of Fond, has followed the tech industry, reading blogs and keeping up with new tech trends. He was fascinated with the tech world and decided to start his own company in San Francisco.
Taro and Fond Co-Founder, Sunny Tsang, first met while Taro was visiting Silicon Valley. Both felt impassioned to create a business and relocated to the US in 2011 to start their company. They had no money or resources, leaving their friends and family behind in Asia to pursue their dream.
After months of attempting and failing to raise funds, the pair drove to Redwood City to meet potential investors. They borrowed a car from a friend, and with little money to fund the trip, they decided to sleep in a Taco Bell parking lot open 24 hours. It was their first business trip, office, and hotel.
After they were asked to leave, Taro and Sunny, they found a cheap hotel with a single room. They lived and worked out of this room for months and pitched their company to hundreds of investors. Each day they would believe that the next day would be a game-changer, but time was running out.
They had one last chance: the TechCrunch Disrupt conference was only a few days before Taro and Sunny had to leave San Francisco. At the conference, they connected with Paul Graham of Y Combinator, who encouraged them to apply. They were accepted in January of 2012, and Fond was founded. Taro and Sunny were the first Japanese YC founders to ever be admitted to the program.
Fond has been providing corporate perks to employees since 2012 and employee rewards and recognition since 2014. Fond is continuing to expand, adding a second office in Portland, Oregon in August of 2018. As of today, Fond is one of the leading rewards and recognitions solutions for companies who want an easy way to build places where employees love to work.
From Sleeping in a Taco Bell Parking Lot to CEO
In 2016, Taro attended Salesforce's annual conference, Dreamforce, to share his journey from sleeping in a Taco Bell parking lot to becoming a CEO. He shares his thoughts on relocating from Japan to Silicon Valley, the journey to joining Y Combinator, and launching Fond (formerly AnyPerk) in 2012.
